The far-infrared absorption , of p-azoxyanisole has been studied in the range 20-200 cm-1, as a function of temperature. The distinct bands in the room temperature specturm persist even at temperatures very close to the crystal-nematic transition and no marked pre-transition effects are present. A broad absorption band is seen in the spectra of the isotropic, nematic and supercooled nematic phases. The position of this band shifts down by ~ 10 cm-1 on going from the nematic to the isotropic phase.en
