Abstract: Towards the end of the nineteenth century, it became clear that within the frame work of classical physics, it was not possible to understand the phenomenon of Black-Body Radiation. In 1900 Max Planck came up with a theory that at one stroke accounted successfully for all its observed features. This theory has been presented against a backdrop of the major discoveries that led to it.
