Columnar phases of discotic liquid crystals display large charge carrier mobilities and, therefore, can be exploited for various applications such as, one-dimensional conductors, photoconductors, light emitting diodes, photovoltaic solar cells, field-effect transistors and gas sensors. Some chemical aspects of our recent work on the synthesis, characterization and mesomorphic behavior of some electron-rich and electrondeficient discotic liquid crystals are presented.en
