The results of an optical interference experiment where a two-dimensional parameter space consisting of the rotation angles of two halfwave plates contains a lattice of positive and negative singularities are described. It is shown that going around a closed circuit in this space results in a phase shift equal to 2π times the algebraic sum of the indices of the enclosed singularities.en
