With a view to preparing low temperature nematic materials the following two series of compounds were synthesized: 4'-n-alkoxyphenyl-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxy) benzoates, and 4w-n-alkoxyphenyl-(2-hydroxy-4-ethoxy)benzoates. These are stable compounds which form low temperature monotropic liquid crystals and can conveniently be used for making room temperature nematic mixtures.en
