Abstract: Retrieval and display of information is an important aspect of the information explosion currently under way. Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are ideally suited for this purpose, requiring only - I mu W/cm2. After a brief introduction to the electro-optic characteristics of the widely used twisted nematic displays, we discuss methods of multiplexing them, illustrating a new technique developed in our laboratory with n 64 x 64 matrix. We will also discuss some promising new developments which include ferro-electric LCDs which have submicrosecond switching times and the super twisted birefringence efect which have a bistable electro-optic characteristic with an extremely sharp threshold.
