Abstract: Liquid crystals are soft and exhibit many facinating electrooptic effects in view of their dielectric and optical anisotropies. Many of these have been exploited to develop disply technologies and LCDs now dominate the flat panel display industry. Some electrooptic effects are useful for fundamental studies on the properties, and in elucidating structures, of liquid crystals. Some illustrative examples are discussed in the article
