We are not able to verify a previous report of a reentrant nematic phase below a smectic Aı phase (layer spacing d ≈the molecular length, ℓ) in 80BCB-80CB mixtures. X-ray layer spacing measurements identify the smectic phase in question as AD for which d >ℓ. This is the usual sequence seen in all strongly polar systems.en
