Abstract: A half-wave plate sandwiched between two-quarter-wave plates (a QHQ) may be used as a variable linear retarder. We describe some new features of the optical properties of such a device and present results of an experimental demonstration of a ferroelectric liquid crystal phase-only modulator based on the above principle.
