Attraction between two like half singularities in nematic liquid crystals

Abstract

It is shown that a three dimensional distortion midway between two like half singularities results in an attractive interaction between them, ending in a bound state. The theory appears to account for the experimental observations of Nehring and Saupe as well as those of Cladis and Kleman.
