Abstract: Phenylacetylenes 4-​RC6H4C≡CH [R = C4-​C12 branched alkyl] were prepd. as intermediates for novel hexaalkynylbenzene derivs., which are in turn useful for the prepn. of discotic nematic liq. crystals. These compds. can be used as liq. cryst. material for display devices such as, wristwatches, calculators, cash registers, gasoline pumps, electronic test equipment, lap top computers, TV screens and other large area displays. They can also be used as liq. crystal solvents for spectroscopy. Thus, PhBr was treated with Me(CH2)​4CHMeCH2CH2COCl in presence of AlCl3 and CS2 to give Me(CH2)​4CHMeCH2CH2COC6H4Br-​4 which was reduced to the hydrocarbon and treated with HOCMe2C≡CH in presence of PdCl2(PPh3)​2, CuI, TPP, and Et3N to give Me(CH2)​4CHMe(CH2)​3C6H4C≡CCMe2OH-​4. This compd. was hydrolyzed to Me(CH2)​4CHMe(CH2)​3C6H4C≡CH-​4 and treated with C6Br6 in presence of PdCl2(PPh3)​2, PPh3, CuI, and Et3N to give hexakis[4-​(4-​methylnonyl)​phenylethynyl]​benzene which has liq. crystal properties.
