Title: Binding energy of Wannier excitations in polar crystals

Abstract: A simple calculation of the binding energy of a Wannier exciton taking into account the coupling to optical phonons in a phenomenological way is presented. The numerical results are comparable to those found in previous more sophisticated treatments and are in reasonable agreement with experimental values for a variety of polar crystals.
