Abstract: Dr. C. V. Raman's investigations made in his laboratory at Bangaloore had led to the discovery that amethyst exhibited three absorption spectra corresponding to three mutually perpendicular directions and not just one as had hitherto been supposed. He was presiding over the annual meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
