Title: Digital library at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College : A case study

Authors: Hemantha Kumar, G.H.; Nagaraj, M.N.

Abstract: Digital library is not only digitization of physical resources, but also thoughtful organization of electronic collection for better access. Such organization provides coherence to a massive amount of shared knowledge base. Essentially a digital library deals with organization and access of a large information repository. Information and communication technologies have changed the landscape of information handling activities. The proliferation of electronic resources and a paradigm shift from print to electronic format of journals. With the available of open source software for creating repositories, many institutes have established institutional repositories in support of open access. The library is maintained well and regularly enriches its collection in order to allow users full access to current research tools and technologies. Besides, the M.S. Ramaiah Medical College Library is an active member of "HELINET" consortium offering more than 700 indexed national and international journals. It has more than 48 computer terminals with internet accessibility and facilities for scanning, printing and photocopying. In addition to that, a CD and Video based journal section with 'Proquest' system with volumes of journals dating back to 7years from 235 foreign countries. The M.S. Ramaiah Medical College Library to build the Greenstone digital library software is an open-source system for the construction and presentation of information collections. Collections built with Greenstone offer effective full-text searching and metadata-based browsing. An attempt has been made to provide on insight into what M.S.
Installing newgenlib: open source library automation package

Title: Installing newgenlib: open source library automation package

Authors: Anuradha, K.T.; Savanur, Kiran P.

Abstract: With the Open Source Software (OSS) initiative catching up, there are many Integrated Library Automation Packages (ILAP) available. These OSS- ILAPs are comparable with any commercial ILAP. However, the success of any OSS mainly depends on the availability of the manuals and technical support. NewGenLib in an ILAP and was released in March 2005 as commercial software but declared OSS in January 2008. However, there is no detailed installation manual available. Hence an effort is made here to give a detailed step by step procedure for NewGenLib installation both on Windows and Linux operating systems. The study was carried out in 2008 and two workshops were conducted during January and August 2009 and more than 50 professionals were trained. The workshop contents can be viewed at http://dharmaganja.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/index_files/workshop.html

Description: Restricted Access

Title: Migrating from informal to formal consortium — COSTLI Issues

Authors: Birdie, Christina; Patil, Y.M.

Abstract: There are many models of library consortia which have come into existence due to various reasons and compulsions. FORSA (Forum for Resource Sharing in Astronomy) is an informal consortium born from the links between academic institutions specializing in astronomy in India. FORSA is a cooperative venture initiated by library professionals. Though this consortium was formed mainly for inter-lending activities and bibliographic access, it has matured over the years to adopt the consortium approach on cooperative acquisitions, due to increased requirements.

Description: Restricted Access, Library and Information Services in Astronomy VI: 21st Century Astronomy Librarianship, From New Ideas to Action.
